? Why Use Heat Treated Flour

Just like eggs, flour is considered to be a raw ingredient that could potentially harbor bacteria such as salmonella or E. coli and needs to be cooked before being eaten. When flour is heated to the proper temperature (such as when baking cookies), the heat from the oven kills off any bacteria that may be present thus making it safe to eat.

? How To Make Edible Cookie Dough

This recipe is just like making cookies (but even easier since you don't have to bake them!) Go ahead and grab your mixing bowl or stand mixer, a rubber spatula to scrape down the sides, your measuring utensils, and a spoon to dig right in!

Get ready to enjoy 15 servings of this rich and delicious cookie dough!

    1. Cream. In a large mixing bowl or the bowl of your stand mixer, cream together 1 cup of softened butter, 1 cup of light brown sugar, and 6 tablespoons of granulated white sugar until creamy, pale, and fluffy.
    2. Add ingredients. Add ? teaspoon of salt, 3 tablespoons of milk, and 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract then mix until evenly distributed and creamy again. Then add 2 cups of heat-treated all-purpose flour (to prevent bacteria) and mix until just combined.
    3. Mix in chocolate chips. Fold in 1 cup of mini chocolate chips and serve. Refrigerate your edible cookie dough if you want to serve or enjoy it later (you may opt to warm it at room temperature for a few minutes to soften again).

Go ahead and dig into this sweet cookie dough with a glass of milk ready to go! If you want to snack on some baked cookies, make sure to take a look at these delicious chocolate chip cookies! Enjoy!

    ? Angela's Tips & Recipe Notes

    • Heat treat your own all-purpose flour by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C) and spread the 2 cups of AP flour needed for this recipe on a rimmed baking sheet. Bake for 6-8 minutes or until the flour reaches 160°F (71°C) when checked with a digital thermometer. Cool the heat-treated flour completely before using it in this recipe.
    • This recipe features classic chocolate chips! However, you can easily add your favorite mix-ins like M&M candies or nuts!
    • Make sure to let the flour cool completely before mixing it into your dough as it could easily cause the butter to melt.
    • Even though you aren't baking this dough, you should still measure out the flour by using the spoon and level method. This is always the best way to measure flour (other than using a scale)!

    ? Storing

This cookie dough is so addicting that there is no way you'll have any leftovers! However, just in case you do, you can store your edible cookie dough in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week!

    ? FAQ

Can I Freeze Edible Cookie Dough?

Sure! There are two options for freezing your cookie dough. First, portion the cookie dough out into single servings on a baking sheet and pop it in the freezer until solid. Then, you can transfer the servings into a sealed container and keep them frozen.
Secondly, you can just freeze the entire batch if you don't want to portion out the dough. When ready to enjoy, simply move the cookie dough into the fridge to defrost overnight! It can be frozen for up to 2 months.

Can I Bake Edible Cookie Dough?

No, I would not recommend baking this dough. It does not have all of the necessary ingredients to rise and bake properly. The cookies would spread a ton and be really flat. Instead, take a look at my other yummy cookie recipes that bake up perfectly every time!

Is Edible Cookie Dough Safe To Eat?

Yes! While your typical cookie dough is not safe to eat due to eggs and raw flour, this cookie dough is totally safe! Using heat-treated flour kills off any possible bacteria and the eggs are left out altogether!
