    ? Origin

The precise origin of the Bahama mama cocktail is a bit murky. Many think it was named for a Caribbean dancer from the 1930s, Dottie Lee Anderson, who frequently used the stage name.

One Bahamian bartender did claim to be the inventor of the Bahama mama, his name is Oswald 'Slade' Greenslade. He claims in his self-published book 'One More Cocktail' that he invented it while working at the Nassau Beach Hotel. There are no further resources to support this claim, however.

    ? Bahama Mama Ingredients

    • Coconut Rum - 1 ounce of coconut rum, I prefer Malibu.
    • Dark Rum - 1 ounce of dark rum.
    • Orange Juice - 1 ounce of orange juice.
    • Pineapple Juice - 1 ounce of canned pineapple juice.
    • Grenadine Syrup -  ? ounce of grenadine syrup. Many people think grenadine is cherry flavored due to its red color, but it is actually made with pomegranate juice!
    • Cherry (optional) - 1 Maraschino cherry for garnish.
    • Pineapple Wedge (optional) - 1 pineapple wedge for garnish.

? How To Make A Bahama Mama

You don't have to crush any ice or bust out the blender for this recipe! You will need a Collins or hurricane glass, a cocktail shaker, and a home bar kit or shot glasses for measuring.

The recipe is for a single cocktail, though you can definitely make as many as you like!

    1. Combine the ingredients. Add 1 ounce of coconut-flavored rum, 1 ounce of dark rum, 1 ounce of orange juice, 1 ounce of pineapple juice, and ? an ounce of grenadine to a cocktail shaker then fill it with ice.
    2. Shake to chill. Shake until thoroughly chilled. Fill a Collins or hurricane glass with fresh ice and strain the cocktail into the glass.
    3. Serve. Garnish with a cherry and/or pineapple wedge if desired.

    ? Cocktail Tips & Variations

    • An orange slice or brandied cherry also makes some great garnishes for a Bahama mama!
    • Though the original version of a Bahama Mama does include coffee liqueur, most modern recipes no longer include it. It adds a subtle earthy and chocolatey element. If that sounds enticing, try swapping out the grenadine for an ounce of Kahlua or your favorite coffee liqueur.
    • Many modern variations of this cocktail call for white rum instead of dark rum. You can certainly make that swap if that is what you have on hand or prefer!

    ? Foods To Serve With

If you are looking for some great appetizers to enjoy with this drink, here are some ideas to try!

    • Air Fryer Coconut Shrimp
    • Spanish Mussels
    • Charcuterie Board
    • Pineapple Banana Bread
    • Crab Stuffed Shrimp
    • Calamari

    ? FAQ

What Flavor Is A Bahama Mama?

A Bahama mama is a tropical fruity flavor. The combination of coconut rum, orange juice, pineapple juice, and grenadine (which is sweet and tart because it is made with pomegranate juice) makes this one refreshing drink!

What Kind Of Alcohol Is In A Bahama Mama?

Rum! I use a combination of classic rum and coconut rum to best balance the flavors. Some variations may also include coffee liqueur or orange liqueur.

    Is A Bahama Mama Frozen?

A Bahama mama can be made into a frozen cocktail in the blender, or you can simply serve it over ice! If you don't mind a little brain freeze, you can certainly use crushed ice and blend to your desired consistency.
